Your Microneedling Appointment and the Days After
Nervous about needles? Here’s how a session goes.
It starts with your skin and history. You fill out forms before your visit, and we take medical images before treatment.
Over the next days, your skin heals. Lighter skin often turns red and deeper skin a darker shade, with a sunburn-like feel that usually fades within a week. Dryness, itching, or peeling can last one to seven days.
Next comes the pen. Yassmen works SkinPen over your face and neck, and you may feel some discomfort while she does.
Then you protect your new skin. Makeup and sunscreen can go on after 24 hours. Skip tanning before your visit, and avoid planned sun for two weeks after.

Can Microneedling Cause Dark Spots or Scarring? Side Effects and Who Should Wait
Yes, it can. Microneedling can cause pigment changes and, less often, scarring, and the risk of hyperpigmentation is higher on deeper skin.
Most side effects show up soon after a session and clear. Some may not go away, and a result may not match what you hoped for.

Common Questions About Microneedling
How many microneedling sessions will I need?
Microneedling may take more than one session, and some people need a series for their best results. Your number is set with you, based on your skin and what you’d like to change. In the acne-scar study behind SkinPen’s clearance, people had three sessions a month apart. That was the study’s plan, not a rule for yours.
When will I see results from microneedling, and how long do they last?
Microneedling results build as your skin makes new collagen. Some change may show within a few weeks, and full results usually take several months. Over time, results fade as your body loses collagen. Sun protection and not smoking slow that down, and dermatologists may suggest a yearly maintenance session.
Does microneedling hurt?
Microneedling can feel uncomfortable during the session, and afterward your skin may feel sunburned for a short while. A numbing cream is usual for microneedling, and you can ask how your own session is set up when you call or book. If needles make you nervous, tell Yassmen before she starts.
Is there an age limit for microneedling?
Microneedling with SkinPen is cleared for facial acne scars in adults 22 and older, and that clearance sets no upper age. Whatever your age, your skin and health history are reviewed before your first session, so your plan starts from where your skin is today.
Can I do microneedling at home instead?
At-home microneedling products aren’t meant to puncture the skin. One that does can lead to infection or scarring, and can spread warts, cold sores, and other viruses. SkinPen is a prescription device used in our office, made to puncture the skin at a set depth. In-office microneedling has risks of its own, which is why your skin and history are checked first.
