What Is Volume Loss?

Changes in the face that you see in the mirror happen, for the most part, in a systematic and orderly manner.  In fact, these changes start happening in our late 20s and early 30s…..much earlier than most think. Volume loss is multifactorial. The bones change, and they offer less robust support for the face as time goes on. Then, the deep and more shallow fat pads in the face begin to shrink, and some drop and sag. This creates shadows, hallows, and lines on the face that makeup cannot hide. The muscles of the face in some areas also lose strength and offer less support to the structures above them. Finally, you have changes in the skin from the loss of bone support, fat pad positioning, muscle motion changes, sun damage, and free radical damage. Also, genetics plays a role, and how your family’s faces tend to age can also be predictive for you.

What Causes Volume Loss?

Volume loss is primarily caused by the natural aging process, which decreases collagen and fat in the skin. Other factors, like sun damage and significant weight loss, can also contribute to the condition.
